Science, Society, and Responsibility:
What the Heck Does a Scientist Do?

Enrique Castro Camus
Centro de Investigaciones en Optica, A.C.

This is a talk aimed at juniol high school and high school students, where both the role of science and scientists in the construction of the modern world are discussed. The talk demystifies the "crazy and disheveled" researcher, but above all, it invites young people to reflect, think, and question critically. It emphasizes the importance of reasoning and ensuring that such reasoning is built upon evidence-based knowledge as the driving force behind human progress.

The talk is dedicated to Prof. Harold Kroto (1939-2016), who was a Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, an extraordinary researcher, and a tireless science communicator. It is also partially based on similar talks given by Kroto himself.
